Making A Career of Community Service

The Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and supporters of the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law congratulate Executive Director Betty Nordwind on her selection by the State Bar of California as the recipient of the 2014 Loren Miller Legal Services Award!

The State Bar of California is bestowing its prestigious Loren Miller Legal Services Award for 2014 on the Center’s Executive Director Betty Nordwind. This lifetime achievement award recognizes Nordwind for her long-term commitment to providing legal services to very low-income persons. Honorable Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California will present the award to Nordwind on September 12th at the State Bar of California Legal Services Office Awards Reception.

Under the dynamic leadership of Nordwind, the Center has evolved into a legal aid powerhouse, serving some of the poorest members and residents of LA County. Her vision of creating an innovative institution has yielded several pioneering legal services programs, which focus on educating and empowering clients and meeting the needs of a wide variety of very vulnerable persons who could benefit from Center services, including:  domestic violence victims, women veterans, incarcerated moms, low-income dads, older spouses, and community college students.

Under Nordwind, each year an army of 300 volunteer lawyers and law students donate thousands of hours of assistance. They are joined by a robust and generous group of law and accounting firms, individual philanthropists, bar associations and foundations providing major financial support.  The third arm of the Center is led by dedicated Center staff working tirelessly to resolve critical family law challenges for clients.

Nordwind said of her selection, “It is a great honor and validation to receive this award, but no woman is an island. This award really belongs to everyone–the staffs, volunteers, donors, mentors and my family who have all supported me every step of the way from the beginning and who have made it possible for me to follow this path.”
