Strengthening the Bonds with Top Corporate Law Firms in LA

In the sleek corridors of Winston & Strawn LLP, partners from some of the top corporate law firms in Los Angeles gathered to network and learn more about the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law. A luncheon, graciously co-hosted by Buhai Board Member Susan Alker (Winston & Strawn LLP) and long-time supporter, Susan Steinhauser, was held on August 7th and gave attendees an occasion to find out more about the Center’s mission, innovative programs, and board and volunteer opportunities.

Buhai Center Board President, Jessica Uzcategui, reflected on why she became involved with the Center. “During college I learned that anyone can be victimized through abuse of power, regardless of their access to resources. For those without, this victimization is very difficult to overcome.” She stressed that by connecting with corporate lawyers, the Center can expand its presence in Los Angeles and assist a greater number of impoverished individuals and families. Buhai Executive Director, Betty Nordwind, described the legal services and education the Center provides on an ongoing basis to very low-income persons and highlighted some of the Center’s programs, including domestic violence and representation where needed.

Georgia*, a Buhai Center client who benefited from the work of volunteer lawyers and staff, spoke about her experience during her divorce, custody and support proceedings. The room fell silent as she elaborated on the traumatic circumstances that brought her to the Center and expressed her gratitude for the help she received. Susan Steinhauser concluded with a call to duty, emphasizing the importance of becoming involved with the Harriett Buhai Center through Board leadership and pro bono opportunities.
