CSBG Funding at Risk!
Did you know there’s a federal program that helps communities fight poverty in every state and nearly every county and congressional district across the country? It’s called the Community Services Block Grant, or CSBG. Here at the Buhai Center, CSBG has been one of our most reliable sources of funding for years.
CSBG helps keep organizations like the Buhai Center running. For us, that means providing more free family law services to low-income families and survivors across L.A. County.
And it’s not just the Buhai Center—CSBG is a lifeline for hundreds of agencies across the country, helping families access housing support, job training, food programs, and other critical services in their own communities.
But the future of CSBG is uncertain. Earlier this year, it was cut from the federal budget, and now Congress is debating its fate for 2026. Representatives Jim Costa from California and Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania are circulating a bipartisan letter asking their colleagues to support $780 million in CSBG funding.
For the Buhai Center, this funding is essential. Without it, we face a growing budget deficit that threatens our ability to serve Angelenos who have nowhere else to turn. Across the country, agencies that families rely on are facing the same challenge.
You can make a difference. Here’s how to contact your U.S. House Representative in just a few minutes:
- Go to www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative.
- Enter your zip code and press ‘Find Your Representative.’
- Click on your Representative’s website link.
- Look for a ‘Contact’ or ‘Email Me’ button.
- Send a short message asking them to sign the Costa/Fitzpatrick CSBG letter and support funding for FY2026.
It only takes a few minutes, and your voice can help protect funding for the Buhai Center and other critical agencies across the country.
Together, we can make sure CSBG continues to strengthen communities, support families, and help them thrive. Take action today—it truly matters.
I am writing as a constituent to urge you to support the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) in FY2026 and to sign the bipartisan letter circulated by Representatives Jim Costa and Brian Fitzpatrick.
CSBG helps agencies like the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, a nonprofit that is essential to our community, provide free legal services, education, and advocacy to low-income residents of Los Angeles County. The Center assists with child custody, support, restraining orders, divorce, and more, helping families stay safe, stable, and secure.
Earlier this year, CSBG was cut from the federal budget. Restoring this funding is critical to ensure agencies nationwide can continue serving families who rely on them.
